Embrace the Cliche part III

Uncle Sam Calls

Around January 2007, Mat started talking to a military recruiter. Mat took his ASVAB test and passed with flying colors, receiving offers from every branch of the military.

Eventually, Mat chose the Marines Corp and signed a contract to leave a few days after his high school graduation.

The last time I saw him was the Sunday before he left in May. The day was sad, and we cried and laughed together. I was so proud of him for joining the military, and I wanted to be there for him for his experience. We promised to write over his three-month absence.

I never got to see him off. He left really early in the morning and had to prepare for the long bus ride to Parris Island, S.C without me. For the next three months I looked forward to reading his letters and reading about his experiences. I did not expect things to turn around as quickly as they started.
